On August 1, 1982, Sri Chinmoy called the song Sonar Baran his "Birthday Song", as he had written the Bengali poem on his birthday while at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in India. In the spring of 1974, he set music to it and translated the Bengali into English. The song was part of 105 Bengali songs learned by various members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre before his birthday in 1974 and who performed them on August 27, 1974. The Bengali poems and translations were first published in 1974 in the book titled "Supreme, I Sing Only For You" and the songs were later published in 1974 in a songbook of the same title.
